The Photo section contains a number
of photos, postcards etc. There are even some German Reichsmarks.
Many of them have been glued into the logbook. There has
been no attempt to look at the back of these photos if there is
a danger of damaging them. Where there is a note on the
back of the photo, it has been scanned and a link provided..
1. Photo
-Tommy is 4th in from either side in the middle row. Photo taken
by Germans. Stamped as noted by Gabe in his comments on Photos
2. Photo
-Another group (Malachy Malin is in the centre row, far right
wearing an overcoat- see page 47 of the log)
3. Tommy
-appears to have been taken at Milag
4. Photo of Darlene
and pup. Back of photo.
5. Darlene
and family. Back of photo.
6. Letter
from Darlene -addressed to Tommy at Stalag XB ILAG. It appears
to have been received at Milag.
7. Photo of three men with cross
marked Walter Skett.
Smaller writing under the name appears to be dates. Walter Skett
was shot by a German guard while violating curfew. Gabe
has provided these details. I have
been in touch with Denis and Elvira Heath in New Zealand. Elvira
is Walter Skett's sister. They have provided information
to Gordon and Barbara Mumford who have created a web page in Walter's
honour. You can find this page at: http://www.gordonmumford.com/pow-5.htm.
8. Westerimke Cemetery.
9. Photo of Evelyn.
Note on the back says it was to Percy
Stanton.
10. Photo
of man and two women. The harbour in the background looks
a bit like Halifax NS.
11. Photo
of girl with donkey and horse. On the back
it says From Connie To Angus. The scratched out part seems
to be "rather send myself."
12. Photo
of little boy. Interesting because it is in colour. It has
be cut out from another, but the back
seems to read to Sam from Jim.
13. This photo
was beside the previous one and the back indicates that it is
from Sylvia to Uncle Sam.
14. Photo
of a German(?) town. No caption.
15. Photo
of a group of people. There is a note on the back
identifying some of them.
16. Postcard
of a German U-Boat.
17. Postcard
of a German battleship. This is the Gniesenau.
18. Postcard
of a German town.
19. POW
photo. This photo originally presented a bit of a mystery.
The stamp on the back is not completely legible. Gabe
sent some comments on it. I have received a couple of e-mails
from people who have similar photos with exactly the same backgrounds.
Carolyn Morrisey of Melbourne, Australia sent this photo
of a group that includes her father Robert Baird (2nd rt -back
row white shirt). I am also attaching an e-mail
that Carolyn sent me regarding her father's time in the camps.
Frédéric Turner of Arras, France also has a similar
photo of his grandfather, father and uncle taken in the same place.
New
-Walter is Walter Bowden, he is third from the left in the back
row. He is 85 now and lives near Dunkirk in France. I have modified
the photo to show the names of those he could identify. Fredric
Turner sent me the attached e-mail
with details. The translation may not be accurate.
Walter apparently gave this photo
to Tommy on the day the camp was liberated. The photo was actually
taken at Giromagny in the Territoire De Belfort (France). It was
probably taken in the spring of 1944. In the autumn of 1944 a
number of these internees were sent to Westerimke.
Frédéric's grandfather,
father and uncle's were like many of these civilian internees
British veterans and their familes who stayed in France after
WWI to work for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
20.These photos have no caption and
are not clear as to who they are: -Woman
-Man -Man
-Three Men -Woman
-Three Women -Bathing
Beauties -Woman at beach
21. Three
men -may have been taken in camp.
22. Four
men on a ship. The name Bruno is written under the photo.
23. British
Sailor.
24. Two
men on a boat.
25. Group
of POWs.The man in the centre with his hands in his pockets
is Lewis McMahon. The rest of the
men in the photo like Lewis may have been Tommy's roomates. Lewis
had this same photo in his possession. Clicking on his name will
take you to a page with a biography and pictures that Kevin McMahon,
Lewis son sent.
26. Three
men in military uniform. The headgear is unfamiliar,
although it could be winter hats with ear flaps, the uniforms
look like air force. The picture has To T. written on it.
27. Soldier
on a tank. The tank is a British Whippet, used in WWI
and for training purposes after. Thanks to the members
at Maple
Leaf Up Forum for helping identify it. This appears
to be another photo
of the same tank. The second photo is labeled Debert NS, but was
probably taken at Camp Borden in Ontario. This tank is still
at Camp Borden, here is a photo taken in 2004.
Additional photos of Camp Borden tanks can be found here.
28. Double
exposure. Looks like a picture of barbed wire and a
picture of some sailors (possibly German).
29. POW
This photo was next to a photo of Tommy.
30.Cut
out from a magazine. German article, shows a factory
and what looks like bomb damage. There is a quote from Hitler
and a picture of him is next
to this article. It would be interesting to know what the article
says, although it has the feeling of being propaganda. -Stefen
Siverud of Kalmar, Sweden feels that this was a allied air dropped
probaganda leaflet. He has kindly provided a translation.
31.
Commandant's Office in Westertimke. The same or a similar
building in 2005.
